Selected Works
- Professor Chitoran's work focuses on the interface between phonology (the cognitive representation of sound systems) and phonetics (the physical properties of sounds). Professor Chitoran studies in particular how variation in speech can give rise to stable linguistic categories (consonants, vowels, syllables) that make up the sound systems of the world’s languages. More recently she has been investigating this research question in languages of the Caucasus: Georgian (South Caucasian) and Lezgi (North East Caucasian).
